BODHI BEAR is an ongoing series I began in October 2004, shortly after my grandmother's death. When I was home for the funeral, I went through some of my grandmother's things, and found a copy of the Prajnaparamita (Heart Sutra) with her annotations. Since then, I've been studying the 260-word sutra, hoping somehow it would bring me closer to my grandmother's thoughts. So far, I seem to have more questions than answers… Just what is "Perfect Wisdom"? "Emptiness"?

Combining Chinese techniques and Western sensibilities, or vice-versa, BODHI BEAR TWO is a series of self-portraits. Each painting is a cerebral journey with an emotional outcome; sometimes it's the other way around. It's also like making a mandala – both obsessive and meditative at the same time. The square canvas represents the East, West, North, South – totality.
Like my other work, this series is about lemon and orange, lost and found. It's walking fine lines, dichotomies, and finding balance in all the different layers.
